Today we’d like to introduce you to Gaby and Andrew Olson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Gaby and Andrew. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.Hi, my name is Gaby, and I’m the co-owner of Aries 70 Studio with my husband, Andy.

I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. After six years of living in Miami, FL, I decided to visit AZ for a short vacation in July of 2004. While everybody was miserable from the heat, I fell in love with the state and packed my bags and moved to the desert four months later. A short time after arriving I met my husband and that was it.

Art has been a big part of me my entire life. I started drawing when I was six years old, and was ejected from my art class because I was too advanced. At the age of 14, I was recognized as the youngest talent in painting in Buenos Aires and won the Talent of the Year Award. Once I finished school, I was contemplating if I wanted to be a doctor or a graphic designer.

My first job was as a stage coordinator for the opera and ballet at the Teatro Colon, the most recognized theater in Buenos Aires. I was fascinated with the role I had and the great opportunity to meet all these monsters of the performing arts industry.

While working at the opera house, I pursued my career as a graphic designer, and after eight years of working in the theater, I had the opportunity to move to Miami to continue my career in graphic design. I love art in any way, shape, or form! I was always taking photos but never really invested in a “real” camera.

Since our first nephew was born, my husband, a graduated photographer, surprised me with a semi-professional DSLR camera back in 2010 and I guess it was the beginning of this growing passion for photography. The seed was now planted. It wasn’t until 2013; however, when I finally decided to take seriously what people had been telling me for years. Make a business of it!

April 3, 2013, was when I created my Facebook page. I’ve had the name picked since I was a little girl. Because I’m an Aries and born in 1970, the company would be Aries 70. My husband had his two cents and suggested to add “Studio” since we started off with graphic design and might evolve the business with the times.

Actually, he had a business name he picked out in college when he was working with ceramics, and his idea was Pit Fire Studios. We blended the two, and that’s how Aries 70 Studio was born. The rest has been a blessing.

We specialize in Maternity, Newborn and Children Portraiture. My husband and I are the perfect teams. We work together, we dream together, and we are constantly teaching and learning from each other. We are very blessed to have one another in our lives and look forward to every photo shoot and every new day.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?Life is a series of challenges that we face everyday. Weather it be your relationship, family or work. Andy and I both work full time, 40+ hours a week and many times the questions arise about focusing and investing ourselves full time into photography or not. We manage to survive with less hours of sleep and a more messy house because we don’t have much time for ourselves. We spend nights editing and enjoy our “dates” differently than other couples as we consider going to a photoshoot as “going out.” Working together has definitely made our relationship stronger and presents its own challenges. Do we agree on everything? No. No way! In fact we disagree on a great deal but the discussions keep new ideas coming in and always drives us try new things, think outside the box and overall improve our work from both a technical stand point as well as an artistic one. I absolutely love working with my husband and sometimes, well…not so much.

Please tell us about Aries 70 Studio.
Aries 70 Studio is a home-based business in Glendale. We used to rent a house when we started but soon learned that the limited space was inadequate for the business. After searching for months, we finally found the perfect home with a perfect space. The previous owner had converted the patio into an Arizona room with great light and open space.

Our home studio is now approximately 20’x42′ which allows us to set up multiple sets for all types of shoots. In the studio, we focus on seasonal and themed sessions like cake smashes and minis. We also do luxury boudoir, specialized maternity and newborn sessions in the comfort of our large climate controlled studio.

We do love exotic locations and are always traveling to the mountains, and desert to bring our clientele the most beautiful images we know how to create. Andy has been implementing videos into our sessions, including aerial footage from his drone, which makes for very interesting galleries.

One thing we have also been incorporating is recorded messages from the parents to their children. It is very powerful and one of the best ways to really capture the moment.

In 20 years, when these kids see the pictures and videos we’ve created, they will again be reminded of how much they are loved and will always be able to cherish the purest of memories.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood? The Christmas celebrations in Buenos Aires were always huge for me as a child because they would close the streets so all the families could come out and be together. They always wound up at my parent’s house because it was also my dad’s birthday.
